On That Grind

Posted by: Phill on: December 5, 2009

Yep, This was expected.  I am submitting this post knowing full well that I put little to no thought into it.  But it is alright.  I studied for about 9 hours already today and am about to do probably 4 more… with similar numbers expected for tomorrow and Monday as well.  If your with me on this, I hope your hard work pays off and all goes well for you in the lead up to Christmas.  So here it is, I’m signing off for the night.  Peace.

Last Day of Class

Posted by: Phill on: December 4, 2009

Today was my last day of classes for the winter quarter… Now it is time to lock things down and study my brain out until next Thursday,  at which point I will be done with Finals and get to go home and see my beautiful girlfriend and family and sunny San Diego :-)   So wish me luck!  I am not worried about my drama class (should be an easy A) but NPB and Bio have me scared a litle bit :-(   Regular, non “cop out” posts will resume in a week, as I suspect the quality of my writing will dwindle in an inversely proportional ratio with the amount of hours I will study over the next 6 days :-P   Peace!

End of the Week Laugh

Posted by: Phill on: December 3, 2009

As I was thinking about what to write today I came to a interesting conclusion.

I figured that I could talk about the deep and important issue of the UC fee increases.  There was a really performance exhibit on the quad today protesting the fee hikes and I could have posted pictures and discussed how the increases are effecting every student on campus (almost).

I thought about taking the pop culture art route again and talking about the brand new OK GO video which is completely amazing or the new Motion City Soundtrack single which was just released.

Then again I could just post a link to that really cool video of the guy who recently invented a personal jetwing pack.

But then I came to this conclusion.  I am sure many of you are just like me in the sense that towards the end of the week (especially a particularly busy one) you just need a little pick me up.  And I thought to myself, “Phill… What can you do do lift people spirits after a stressful week? Or you own for that matter?”  And the conclusion that I came to is this.  Nothing feels better than a deep and heartfelt laugh :-)   So I don’t know if you will appreciate this humor or not (and the fact that I do shall be reserved for an entirely different post, lol) but watch this video and see if it tickles your funny bone as much as it did mine.  I definitely laughed out loud a few times, but then again, I AM an engineer… so my take on humor is not really valid :-P   Anyway, here it is… enjoy :-)

When Words Are Not Enough

Posted by: Phill on: December 1, 2009

An interesting idea was presented to me today.

What if, instead of trying to use dance or music or art to try and say something, we use it to show others what we can’t say.  What if we used different art forms to speak of things that no words can capture or describe.  What if instead of paralleling reality, art explained it.  What if  art was made, not for the world of words, but for the place just beyond it.

That is the place I hope to live in when I create music/art/etc. in the future.  Not  to try and devulge to others what I could say in a blog post or a conversation, but rather, use my talent to describe things that can ONLY be said through my art.  That is the place which I believe art is best suited and when it is used to its greatest capacity.

Just something to think about.

Lupe Fiasco > Hype

Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco.

He had a hit single almost 2 years ago.  The album from which it came was (IMHO) one of the most perfect hip hop albums of my generation.  Intelligent, witty, catchy, smooth… Everything a good album should be.  Lupe had everything before him.  The stage was set, his fame was growing, he was primed.

Then he disappears for 2 years.

No CDs. No singles. No mixtapes. nothing.

But now he is back.

The First Lupe Fiasco Mixtape - It is Lyrical Nirvana

On thanksgiving day Lupe dropped a brand new mixtape on his website for free download.  ( cop yourself a copy of “Enemy of the State: A Love Story” HERE ).  This is the first of 2 mixtapes to be released before the end of the year with a 3-album trilogy to be released thereafter.  Lu is calling the project lupE.N.D.  This, however, is just the beginning.

This mixtape is insanely hot.  I would have happily shelled out dough for this track list and yet Lu graced our ears with it for free.  That says something about a man.  Gotta respect him for that.  As well as his insane spits and messages on this track.  He is a line from one of the tracks that basically says it all:

“The game was looking weak.
The Whole Scene Starved.
So I came in through with some
muscle milk and protein bars.”
Yeah. And that’s just what he did.  When Lu says he beefed the game up he is not kidding.  I am stoked out of my mind to see what this kid will throw at us next.  I am not even going to attempt to try and describe this album, you just have to listen to it for yourself.  As for the message, well… just read this…
“We will not compromise who we are….
We want substance…
We want love not lies…
We will not lose, because we are not losers…. We are Lasers.”

Lu is hot.  His mixtape eats other rappers albums for breakfast.  He is back on track.  We missed you Lu.  Peace.

2 More Weeks

Posted by: Phill on: November 29, 2009

Today finds me traveling back to Davis after 4 days of feasting and family time.  It was a wonderful weekend, but alas it is time to get back to the daily grind.  I have 2 more weeks of school left before I am home for the Holidays and it can’t go fast enough.  Until then, expect lots of cop out posts because I will be pretty busy studying for finals and such.  As for right now, I am off to hop on a plane.  Until next time folks :-)

Rustizzle

Rusty The Chihuahua (a.k.a. Rustizzle, rizzle, radar, etc.)

My dog rusty is a mess.  He has lived a long and happy life, but a life riddled with horrible, yet completely unavoidable accidents.  He has been picked up by an owl, ran over by a truck, and almost eaten alive by a rottweiler.  And yet he keeps on fighting.  The current battle wound list consists of a missing tail, some gnarly scars in his side, no huevos, and (most recently) a lost eye.  Thats right, my dog has one eye, and no tail or manhood.  Despite all of this, he keeps on living.  You would think that after all this he would just wnat to give up on life, but he continues to play and be happy and live a great life.  Granted, he is probably the most spoiled dog on the face of the planet by my mom and sister (He actually sleeps in a bigger, better bed than me) but I don’t think that that discounts his decision to be happy.  So, when you are feeling down, and thinking life may not be worth living, remember Rusty, and mak the choice to live happy.  If He can do it, anybody can.  We love you rizzle and hope your eye feels better!

p.s. I swear we take really good of our animals and all his accidents were completely unavoidable… so don’t report me to PETA or something like that, lol.

Postprandial Somnolence

Posted by: Phill on: November 27, 2009

Typtophan

If you are anything like me, you ate a ridiculous amount of food yesterday.  This is generally followed by a deep and restful period of stuffed bliss generally spent in a recliner or on a couch :-P

Yesterday I definitely passed out on the couch for the entire 2nd half of the tragic Raider game.  This got me thinking.  Why would doing something that you do several times a day (except in excess) elicit this strange reaction?  Check out this link for some info:

Postprandial Solmnolence

This has common names like food coma, post dinner pass out, etc.  But the concept behind the physical response is interesting.  Check it out and learn a little science for the day :-)   Right now I am off to go see “The Blindside” and then pick out a Christmas tree with the family.  So expect a review of the movie tomorrow.  Until Then, enjoy your holiday break, and work off some of that food from yesterday ;-)
